In Swahili, kusoma means “to read” or “to study.”

Our Story
Kusoma was born out of a wild frustration with shallow, box-ticking training and even shallower diversity initiatives. We knew there had to be more, and we know many others feel the same. That’s why our work is rooted in anti-oppression learning that goes beneath the surface, naming and shifting the systems that uphold injustice, not just managing the symptoms. We focus on supporting change that’s not extractive, but collective and generative. There’s no quick fix, but we believe in movement, care, and the power of doing this work differently.
What We Do
This isn’t unconscious bias training. It’s something deeper, and much more urgent. Kusoma offers bold, uncompromising, and practical learning experiences rooted in anti-oppression, built for organisations serious about justice, not just compliance. Our work is participatory, values-led, and focused on creating real, systemic change, not surface-level fixes. We offer a whole range of ways to support your learning and strategy needs from deep-dive workshops and long-term development programmes to strategic consultancy and flexible online tools.
Meet the Founder
the founder of Kusoma. I’m a facilitator, story teller, and parent of two, working across movements and organisations to make anti-oppression work feel possible, not performative.
My work is influenced by Black feminist thought, transformative justice, and the everyday wisdom of those often pushed to the margins.
I created Kusoma to offer learning that’s not afraid of discomfort but also grounded in care, humour, and practicality.
Safia had excellent knowledge and a clear passion for the subject which is contagious.
Kusoma’s Anti-Oppression Principles in Practice was a fantastic course, that helped us move forward in our thinking about how to marry theory with our practice. Safia created a safe and welcoming space that allowed people to be open and honest in their contributions, so that we could explore the topic as a team and grow our collective understanding.
Working with Safia and Kusoma to introduce their workings and principles around addressing systemic racism to Birmingham City Council was both personally and professionally impactful. In the true meaning of the word 'Kusoma' – we were presented with a framework set to readept and restore anti-racist concepts into practice by laying bare the truths around systemic oppression, particularly upon people experiencing multiple disadvantage.
Working alongside Kusoma has allowed us – and the local areas we support – to deepen our knowledge, challenge our thinking and explore key areas of focus for the years ahead.
I found the session a helpful way to unpack difficult topics in a supportive environment. It felt powerful that these conversations were aired given that not everyone in the room regularly engages in these types of difficult discussions. It was great to have that conversation with all trustees and employees.
Working with Kusoma from the planning process to delivery of the workshop was executed to perfection.
Kusoma challenges you, and supports you, to do the work properly, with integrity and heart.
Just brilliant, thank you!
